Cyprus can perform the
economic miracle, the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, said
tonight at a meeting he held with the Qatari Business Association, adding that
Cyprus has achieved this in the past, and more specifically in 1974.
At a meeting in Doha,
where he is paying an official visit, accompanied by Cypriot businessmen,
President Anastasiades referred to the efforts undertaken by his government for
the recovery of the Cypriot economy and pointed out the many comparative
advantages of Cyprus as an investment destination and the many prospects and
opportunities arising in this field, such as in the sector of energy following
the discovery of hydrocarbon reserves in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone.
He added that with
discipline and effort the Cypriot economy can recover.
Present at the meeting
was the ministerial delegation accompanying the President of the Republic on
his visit to Qatar.
After the meeting, the
President of the Republic addressed an event organized by, among others, the
Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Doha, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and
Industry and the Cyprus-Qatar Business Association, in the presence of the
Minister of Energy and Industry of Qatar, Sheikh Moahmmed Al Sada, and a large
number of businesspeople from Cyprus and Qatar.
Speaking at the event,
the Ambassador of the Republic in Qatar, Mr Charalambos Panayides, said this
is the first visit of President Anastasiades to Qatar and it takes place less
than a year since he assumed the highest office in the country, which proves
very clearly the great importance being attached to Cyprus’ bilateral relations
with Qatar.
On his part, the
Minister of Energy and Industry of Qatar said Qatar and Cyprus have enjoyed
exemplary relations characterized by mutual cooperation and respect. “They have
been highlighted by a series of high level visits and the signing of about 20
agreements over the past few years.
Today constitutes a
quantum leap in the development of those relations. The agreements signed this
morning will stimulate our relations in a number of areas including education,
water desalination and energy.
The state of Qatar looks
forward to building stronger relations with the Republic of Cyprus by helping
it to meet its energy needs as well as promoting and attracting
investments in the energy sector.”
