New publication by the Statistical Service: “Criminal Statistics”, 2010




The Statistical Service announces that it has published the Annual Report “Criminal Statistics” for the year 2010. The Report presents data on crime, based on information provided by the Police, the Courts and the Prison. It also presents comparative data for the period 1976-2010.


The most salient developments during 2010 can be summarized as follows:

·        The number of serious offences reported to the Police (true cases) in 2010 was 8.393 compared to 7.104 in 2009. The offences against property constitute the largest group of offences, accounting for 63,8% of serious offences, followed by offences relating to forgery, coining and criminal impersonation with 12,0%. The number of cases concerning drug offences increased by 20,7% compared to the previous year. The number of cases recorded in 2010 was 851 compared to 705 in 2009.

·        The number of adult offenders convicted for serious offences was 1.249, compared to 1.723 the year before. Their median age was 26,0 years for males and 28,0 for females. The women represented only 11,2% of the adult convicted offenders, while the convictions of foreigners constituted 56,8% of the total convictions for serious offences (55,3% of males and 68,6% of females).

·        The number of juvenile offenders who were involved in the commission of both serious and minor offences reached 474 in 2010 (of which 31 were girls) compared to 281 in 2009.

·        According to the Judicial Statistics, 117.854 persons appeared before the courts in 2010, compared to 102.179 in 2009. Of these, 75.693 were convicted, compared to 62.466 the year before.

·        Regarding Prison Statistics, there were 1.301 admissions of convicted persons (1.168 males and 133 females) in 2010, compared to 1.432 in 2009. In addition to the convicted prisoners, 1.469 accused persons (pending trial) were admitted into prison.
