Dozens of messages of condolence and
telegrams were sent to the President of the Republic, Mr Nicos Anastasiades, by
heads of States and Governments, as well as by international personalities over
the passing away of the former President of the Republic, Glafcos Clerides.
Messages of condolence were sent by the
President of the Russian Federation, Mr Vladimir Putin, the Italian President,
Mr Giorgio Napolitano, the Prime Minister of Romania, Mr Victor Ponta, the
Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, Mr Jiri Rusnok, the British Foreign
Secretary, Mr William Hague, and the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Cyprus,
Mr Brechje Schwachöfer.
Messages were also sent by the Pope of
Alexandria and All Africa Theodoros II, Archbishop Demetrios of America, Archbishop of the Maronites Joseph Soueif,
US Senator Mr Robert Menendez, British MP Mrs Theresa Villiers, the Turkish
Cypriot leader Mr Dervis Eroglu and many other international personalities from
the political and business world.
The messages note
the great and highly significant contribution of the deceased in the Republic
of Cyprus’ modern history and emphasize the prominent personality of Glafcos
Clerides both at a European and an international level.
