Remarks by the Government Spokesman on
the meeting
of the President of the Republic with
the US Assistant Secretary of State
The Cyprus problem, energy and the
economy were among the issues discussed by the President of the Republic, Mr
Nicos Anastasiades, and the Assistant Secretary of State for European and
Eurasian Affairs of the United States of America, Mrs Victoria Nuland, the
Government Spokesman, Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said today.
In his remarks to reporters, at the
Presidential Palace, Mr Christodoulides said that “the President of the Republic
had today a very good meeting with the American Assistant Secretary of State Mrs
Nuland, during which a discussion was held on the developments concerning the
Cyprus problem, the talks at the negotiating table on all the aspects of the
Cyprus problem, and there was an extensive discussion on the issue of the
missing persons, an issue on which we are waiting from Turkey to take specific
actions, so that after so many years there can be an end to the agony of their
families.
We think that it is a first rate
opportunity for Turkey to prove in practice what it states in public generally
about the Cyprus problem. The issue of the missing persons is an issue on which
Turkey can, if it wants to, move forward with specific actions.
Issues concerning our region, the
Eastern Mediterranean were also discussed. You are aware of the interest on the
part of the USA on the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, our bilateral
relations were discussed. There is an ongoing dialogue for further upgrading our
relations. Issues concerning energy, security and the situation of the Cyprus
economy were also discussed”.
