Remarks by the Government Spokesman after
the meeting
between the President and the UN Under-Secretary General for Political Affairs
The United Nations fully share the
position that whatever proposals are submitted at the negotiating table must be
within the framework of the joint communique, the Government Spokesman, Mr
Nicos Christodoulides, said today.
In his remarks to the press, following the
meeting between the President of the Republic and the UN Under-Secretary
General for Political Affairs Mr Jeffrey Feltman, the Spokesman said that “it
was a very good and useful meeting during which there was an evaluation of the
(current) phase of the talks.”
He added that during the meeting it was
stressed that whatever proposals submitted at the negotiating table must be
within the framework of the joint communique, “a position fully shared by the
United Nations.”
Mr Christodoulides noted that “it was
agreed that it is necessary to avoid statements and actions that aggravate the
atmosphere of the negotiations, and in this context the President of the
Republic made reference to specific actions. Also stressed was the need for
promoting and adopting bold confidence building measures, measures which, in
parallel with the negotiating process, will give an impetus to the negotiating
process itself. The need for a more active involvement by the European Union
was stressed as well.”
The Spokesman added that “the United
Nations are in constant contact with Mr Van Nuffel (Representative of the
President of the European Commission on the Cyprus problem) who will be in
Cyprus tomorrow.”
