The
Government welcomed
the UN
Security Council resolution 2168
The
Government Spokesman,
Mr Nikos Christodoulides, said that the Government welcomes the UN
Security Council resolution 2168 (2014) by which the mandate of the
UN peace keeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is renewed until January
31, 2015.
In
his statements to the Press
today, at the Presidential Palace, the Government Spokesman noted the
fact that in the resolution the Security Council welcomes the
resumption of the negotiations and the adoption of the Joint
Declaration on 11 February 2014, and expresses its support for the
ongoing efforts of the leaders and interlocutors to reach a
comprehensive settlement the earliest possible.
Mr
Christodoulides
added that the resolution encourages the sides to intensify the
substantive negotiations on the unresolved core issues
interdependently, and calls on the Turkish Cypriot side to restore
the status quo that existed in Strovilia prior to 30 June 2000.
Mr
Christodoulides said the Government considers positive the emphasis
placed on the work of the Committee on Missing Persons and the fact
that it calls upon all parties to provide full access to all areas
expeditiously, given the need to intensify the Committee’s work.
He
added that positive
is also the reference in the resolution with regard to the
implementation of confidence building measures which are expected to
help create a climate that will contribute in the efforts to reach a
settlement.
